Upholding the Nobility of the Teaching Profession and Ensuring Teachers’ Welfare, PPSTA Celebrates its 75th Anniversary

JOHN LAURENCE ROBES, MMC

Quezon City, Philippines – 19 April 2022

The Philippine Public School Teachers Association (PPSTA) recently celebrated its 75th year of existence since its official establishment in 19 April 1947 right after World War II. Beginning only with a simple system of “abuluyan” through the leadership of its founder Ricardo Castro, the association continued to grow over the years, all for the benefit of the public school teachers. Today, PPSTA continues to be of service to its members by providing optimum life insurances, retirement programs, and financial assistance.

The celebration began with a Holy Mass held in the Members’ Service Area at 10AM where walk-in clients were also invited to take part in. After the mass, all clients were also provided with free packed lunch, as well as afternoon snacks. Operations at the PPSTA Main Office were also cut early at 3 in the afternoon, but assured that no client was left unattended.

Five in the afternoon was the official start of the anniversary celebration with the theme “75 years of Upholding the Nobility of the Teaching Profession and Ensuring Teachers’ Welfare,” which was picked through an online contest posted on PPSTA’s Facebook page. This winning piece came from Ms. Cristina L. Arcadio of Sison District Artacho Elementary School, from Division of Pangasinan II, Region I. After the opening segments, a recorded welcome message was delivered by the PPSTA President Dr. Kahar H. Macasayon who addressed his thanks to the association, as well as to all the people involved in maintaining PPSTA to be the foremost association for the public school teachers.

Following the speech of President Macasayon, the PPSTA’s Conservator Atty. Nasser A. Marohomsalic was then called to share some of his message to PPSTA, to the employees, the Board of Trustees, and to the teachers watching through the PPSTA Live broadcast. He emphasized on the successes of PPSTA over the years, even on how it thrived during the global pandemic crisis, while still being in service to the public school teachers, concluding his speech of wishing the association more years to come. Right after that, a quick performance was rendered by the employees of PPSTA for the delight of everyone in attendance.

Upon the conclusion of the performance, the attendees were graced by a message coming from the Department of Education Secretary herself, Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones who rendered her speech through a recorded video. In her statement, she recalled how her parents were also beneficiaries of PPSTA, and therefore saw the benefit of being a member, which she wishes for the other public school teachers to do so. In exchange, however, the Secretary posed lots of challenges that she wishes to be resolved both by the Department of Education, and PPSTA hand-in-hand, with which PPSTA and its employees heeded with much enthusiasm. Once the speech was concluded, an inspirational message was then rendered by Atty. John A. Apatan, Division Manager of the Insurance Commission for Conservatorship and Liquidation (CRL) and former ex-officio Conservator of PPSTA, on behalf of Insurance Commissioner Dennis B. Funa. In his message, Atty. Apatan congratulated all of the members of the management, the staff, as well as the Board of Trustees in this milestone that was once again reached by the association. He also expressed his hope of PPSTA to continue serving the public school teachers, on its way to be eventually, and officially, be lifted from its conservatorship status.

Once the important speakers were done delivering their speeches, the event then began awarding various certifications and awards to select people who have exemplified brilliance, dedication, and passion on each category that they were in. Ms. Marysol Ani from the Accounting Department was awarded the Decades of Service Awards for her 42 years of service. Runner-ups of the Theme Writing contest were also presented and awarded with cash prizes, with the grand winner Ms. Cristina L. Arcadio, represented by PPSTA Region I Trustee Danilo Sison who also gave a short speech for the recognition, as well as gratitude for the association.

A luxurious event such as this anniversary would not be complete without recognizing attendees who have fully committed to the theme of the night, of which two (2) employees were called on stage to be awarded as the Brilliant Diamond awardees of the night. For the Male category, Mr. Michael John Lozano of Treasury Department was pronounced the winner, while for the Female category was Ms. Aureen Israel from the Administration Department. Not long after, the PPSTA departments and its employees were also called on stage to receive commemorative tokens for their dedication and service to the association. This was presented to each employee with the presence of Atty. Apatan, Atty. Marohomsalic, and the present members of the Board of Trustees.

As the event neared its close, the President of the Samahan ng Manggagawa ng PPSTA or SMPPSTA Mr. Francis Joshua Diaz was then called upon on stage as he lead the PPSTA employees in their collective oath as employees of the association. This was followed by the closing remarks of PPSTA’s former Vice President, and current Region V Trustee Oscar Peñaflorida who wished for more celebrations, more excellence, and more power to the association. A community song came after to officially close the celebration.

PPSTA is expected to continue to grow, and will continue to provide services to the public school teachers. Because at PPSTA, “Bayani ka, Gurong Pilipino. Ang PPSTA, Kumakalinga Sa Iyo.”
